Not everyone that comes to the United States plans to immigrate permanently. That is why our government has a long list of non-immigrant visas that it offers to temporary travelers. It should be simple to apply for a visa to the U.S. Normally, you just need to identify the type of visa that best applies to you and then fill out the proper paperwork at your U.S. consulate. Unfortunately, there are often hiccups in the process. If you are dealing with complications, it may be wise to get an experienced New York immigration attorney involved.
You only need to apply for a visa if you are not a member of one of the countries that are included in the visa waiver program. For example, most Canadians do not need a visa to enter the U.S. With a visa waiver, travelers are permitted to enter the country for up to 90 days.
If you are not eligible for a waiver, you will have to fill out paperwork and turn it into your consulate. Once you receive a visa, you are allowed a certain amount of time to stay in the U.S. Most visas also contain provisions about employment. Some are eligible for extensions.
After going through the arduous process of applying for a visa, the last thing you want to hear is that your request was denied. Unfortunately, every day individuals learn that they were not granted access to the United States.
Some common reasons you may not receive your visa are:
⦁ Your application was incomplete
⦁ You failed to provide necessary supporting documentation
⦁ Your intent does not coincide with the visa you applied for
⦁ You misrepresented yourself on the paperwork
⦁ You are facing a public charge
⦁ You are currently residing in the United States illegally
